Driver Pulled To Safety After Car Slams Into Tree In Fiery Crash Near Route 25/8 Connector

Two police officers saved a person who was trapped in a burning vehicle following a crash into a tree.

The crash took place around 4 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 25, in Bridgeport after the driver of a vehicle slammed into a tree on Chopsey Hill Road near the Route 25/8 connector, said Scott Appleby, director of Bridgeport's Office of Emergency Management. 

When Bridgeport Police officers arrived on the scene they found that a female victim was trapped inside the burning vehicle, Appleby said.

Officer Kathleen Ramirez attempted to get the victim out through the passenger side window, but the woman could not reach her hand. 

Sgt. Joaquim DeBarros arrived on the scene and also attempted to get the woman out by trying to break the front window, Appleby said.

Various officers and sergeants from other sectors arrived on the scene and as a team was able to push the vehicle which was on fire back on its wheels and the officers were able to pull the female occupant to safety, Appleby added.

Firefighters with the Bridgeport Fire Department then arrived on the scene and extinguished the fire, Appleby said.

The extent of the victim's injuries was not yet available.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
